With Halloween just around the corner, there seems to be a touch of magic in the air! Since little girls and boys everywhere are dreaming up their costumes, it seemed that we should be able to do a little dress up too.

And dress up is the key word here. Themed weddings can often come off as childish or even slightly creepy. They just don’t feel grown up enough. I feel like themed weddings are the best when they’re almost covert. There are tons of little winks and nods to favorite books, movies, and comics, but nothing super overt or obvious. It’s something that your grandparents will miss, but your friends will totally get. Then it can be understated yet whimsical.

This the first part of a multi-part series on Simply Bridal‘s take on themed weddings. Today, let’s talk about Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight.

Forget the white pasty skin and vampires — sooo goth and middle school — and embrace the green, green forest. Or have your ceremony in a gorgeous meadow, reminiscent of that awesome scene between Edward and Bella. You know the one I’m talking about! Unless, of course, you want a gold and red theme based on the Volturi.

The Cullen Clan comes from the most romantic eras of American history: Rosalie is from the Jazz Age, Jasper the Antebellum South, and Emmett, the American Frontier. So, there’s a lot of vintage details that you can use in your wedding. Or you can go with one of the other covens of vampires from ultra rustic to beautifully refined. You should definitely skim the books again for Esme’s decorating style.

Since Bella is a great cook, you can create a menu that pulls from delicious, family classics or you can go the Italian route straight out of Bella and Edward’s first date where she ate mushroom ravioli.

And of course there’s the dress. Described as both art nouveau and Victorian, Bella’s dress is just the right mix of sensuality and elegance, long sleeves and a V-neck. We’re waiting eagerly to see it for ourselves when the movie comes out November 18th!

Though weddings are steeped in tradition, the trend of the moment is personalization. A wedding allows you to expose and celebrate your identity, along with your fiancé’s. Everything from your venue to your cake toppers can provide an opportunity to share your story. You can even tell that story through your dress.

1. Get Shorty: In the world of fashion, the little black dress is iconic. Some brides are taking this look to the chapel. Short doesn’t mean tactless (though you should avoid the super-snug mini). Rather, the style is flirty, modern and youthful, and shows off your legs to boot.

2. Color Me Happy: Contrary to popular belief, brides do not have to wear white. (Finally!) Muted metallic colors are wildly popular among designers and brides. And don’t shy away from adding a splash of color to the bridal outfit: pink shoes or flecks of gold go far.

3. Intricate Detail: Dresses with a subtle dose of beadwork and lace are dominating the bridal runway. Detailed threads provide visual interest, and add a layer of luxury and splendor to the dress. Experiment with exquisite lace sleeves or a bead embroidered bodice.

4. The Big Time: Did you grow up dreaming about a fairytale wedding and a huge, princess gown? You’re in luck. Big is back, so don’t shy away from adding the oomph. Billowing A-Line and Ball Gown skirts are universally flattering; the wide skirt hides the hips.

5. Bed of Roses: Whether it’s small rosettes or large flower accents along the neckline, fabric flowers are back and big. The organic floral shapes are soft and feminine, and appeal to many earth-conscious brides. Consider a floral beaded neckline or draped floral sash.

More and more we have brides ask us if they can do the flowers themselves……….. the answer is Yes and NO……… BUT…….. you can teach someone to make them for you. Beautiful Brides, the week before your wedding you should have absolutely nothing to work on, let alone your flowers. If you are a go getter and a trooper you can learn how to make your flowers, then teach someone to take over and that way you can have the flowers YOU designed at the price you budgeted for. Just make sure you do your homework. Cheap looks cheap and simple still looks simple. Make sure your design is the look you’re going for, the colors, height, hues. Make a sample centerpiece and write down how long it took you to make and what all it entailed. Sometimes when you do the math it ends up being way cheaper to have them done by a professional. Bienvenidos a las cabañas eco-románticas de Kúuch Ka’anil.

Este hotel es diferente a los demás en el área porque aquí hacemos nuestro mayor esfuerzo por mantener el equilibrio ecológico en la Laguna de Bacalar y el medio ambiente en general mediante la utilización de humedales que filtran el agua de desecho que va hacia el subsuelo, con baños de composta que reciclan las materias orgánicas y las convierten en abono para las plantas, una cocina equipada con trampa de grasas con digestores enzimáticos, así como el empleo exclusivo de energía solar y eólica para la generación de electricidad y el bombeo de agua.

Asimismo, en este lugar únicamente empleamos jabones y detergentes biodegradables, así como filtros solares y repelentes contra insectos que no dañen ni contaminen nuestro entorno.

Fighting Fair is Good for Your Health and Marriage.

The one area that most couples do not explore before they get married is how to fight. It may seem derogatory or somehow cynical to focus on how you will fight with each other when you are beginning a new life together, but nothing could be further from the truth. Learning to fight fair has health benefits as well as emotional benefits.
Happy couples fight as much as unhappy couples. The difference is that happy couples “fight fair”. They are able to clear the air and feel closer after the argument. Nothing is more uncomfortable than being around a couple who doesn’t fight fair—you feel embarrassed that you are witnessing something you should not be. Imagine if you are married to someone who doesn’t fight fair. Each fight or argument leaves you feeling humiliated, abused, and shamed. If you think you are one of those couples, the suggestions below may help. If you and your spouse fight fair congratulations!!! You have already secured your relationship from one of the main reasons couples get divorced.
Tips for Fighting Fair

1. Use “I” Statements. “In other words, I feel this way when you do that” or “I became so angry when you said this or that”. When you use “I” statements you take responsibility for the way you feel and this helps your partner not to feel attacked. This prevents the fight from getting worse because your partner doesn’t become defensive.

2. Keep the communication open. This doesn’t mean you agree with your partner, but it does mean they have a right to their opinion. There are more ways to do something than your way and acknowledging this helps the other partner soften their stance.
3. It is not you against your partner. You are a team. Attacking your partner will build a huge wall and you leave your partner no choice but to defend themselves.

4. Give a signal for time out. If it is your time of the month or if you are stressed with work, it is okay to give a signal you both come up with and postpone the argument or discussion. In fact, sometimes this may solve the problem because you have the time to cool down and think.

5. It is a myth that you have to make up before you go to bed. Whoever started that advice must have enjoyed late night TV on the sofa. Sometimes sleep and letting your unconscious deal with the issue gives you new insights in the morning.

6. Most of us learned how to argue by watching our parents. If your parents set a poor example, make sure you agree with your partner to not repeat the cycle. Go to classes, get counseling, read books—most of us are smart enough to change old patterns that aren’t working. Remember that it takes both people to agree that this is an area of importance and a mutual desire to set a better example to their children.
Anger is one of the most passionate and honest of all emotions. Dealt with in a healthy way, it can stimulate the marriage and deepen its bond. Dealt with poorly you risk losing your spouse and/or children and creating a miserable marriage. All new behaviors take practice on step at a time.

How To Personalize An Engagement Ring

Using a consultant or independent jeweler allows you to take part in the entire process from selecting the stone to collaborating on a design. Not only will you create an extremely personalized, one-of-a-kind piece piece, but you usually will be maximize the value of your ring.

Whether you take the traditional route or use a personal jeweler, there are a few steps you should take before you start the exciting, yet somewhat daunting process of shopping for a ring.

Decide on a budget: Many people use three months’ salary as a guideline, but there are no hard and fast rules. Diamonds have historically appreciated in value over time, but don’t feel pressured to spend more than with what you are comfortable.

Timing is very important: Allow yourself ample time to do your research and source your stone. Diamonds are like snowflakes—each one is different. So it may take a few weeks or even months to find the one that is perfect for you.

Know which shape you want: Many people confuse “cut” with “shape.” “Cut” refers to the symmetry and proportions of the stone. The “shape” is the style or shape into which the stone is cut. “Round Brilliant” is the most classic and popular shape for engagement rings. Other sought-after shapes are “Cushion,” “Asscher” and “Emerald.”

Try to avoid a pre-set diamond: Once a diamond is set, it is quite difficult to examine the stone. The most important and expensive part of the ring is the diamond. You should buy that first and then choose the setting.

Hello! Welcome to my first “Dear Preston” column. I am thrilled to be joining the Event Solutions team. It’s an honor to be writing for a magazine that I have long respected as an invaluable resource in our industry, and I hope to be able to make my own small contribution here in these pages. But I have no intention of doing it alone. (Sorry, folks!)

As the lovely readers of my blog know, I’m a huge fan of community. And when I’m lucky enough to meet young designers, planners and other vendors who are just beginning their careers, I always tell them that they must never underestimate the power of their peers and the event industry community.
